Our Story
Tuuru Mission
Tuuru mission is a complex reality, made up of Tuuru children`s home, Tuuru cottolengo health centre with maternity and out patients departments and St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Parish Tuuru. Within the mission also are present religious charismatic families founded by St. J.B. Cottolengo: Cottolengo Fathers, Cottolengo Sisters Family of apostolic Life and Contemplative life with the respective formation houses.
Tuuru Children’s Home
The Centre was opened in 1965 by Consolata Missionaries to meet the needs of the children and adolescents affected by polio or living with mental disabilities. It was handed over to the Cottolengo communities of Kenya in 1972, to continue to help the local community in facing the challenges of disability. With the passing of the years, the transformation of society and the advancement of medicine, the Polio challenges eradicated and new forms of disability have come up. Currently, the Centre is taking care of children with multi-challenges: cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, spastic, spinabifida…
The home provides holistic care to the needs of the beneficiaries
Through intensive physiotherapy, provision of special shoes and various walking aids from our orthopaedic laboratory and general education and learning.
Tuuru Health Centre
We protect human life from conception to its natural death. Through the provision of affordable and secure health care to the population of the area in the maternity and outpatient departments.
Projects
Mwana Centre
There are numerous people who come to our health centre for medical care. Currently, there are many cases that need more monitoring and since we do not have an in-patient pediatric wing we have to refer to other facilities. In 2019 through the help of volunteers, we started construction of an inpatient department called Mwana Centre meaning Child centre mainly to be able to meet the needs of needy people particularly children. The construction is 70%, still remaining internal finishing and furnishings.
